Age is Just a Number: 7 Must-Know Tips for Men Over 40 to Stay Fit and Flexible!

The methods of training remain the same, irrespective of whether you’re male or female, old or young. If building and maintaining muscles is your goal, then resistance training needs to be your best buddy.

Looking to gain stamina and endurance? Ensure you keep two to three cardio sessions a week. And if you wish to shed pounds, then you need a caloric deficit.

These rules are common from the age of 18 to 80! With age, however, some of that mobility may be lost in the joints, and our muscles are just not that flexible anymore. That’s life.

But the good news is that you can actually slow down that process by starting young and keeping an active lifestyle that flows right into old age. Just think of action legends like Stallone and Dolph Lundgren-they still look fierce and fit while most of their peers have let themselves go.

The secret? Consistent exercise. For anyone to stay vibrant in later years, they really have to stay active throughout life!

If you’re just beginning that journey now, don’t worry about it! You can always start fresh at any time. You’ll be amazed at your commitment and consistency with how much progress can be made in a very short time period.

In this article, we share seven key tips for guys over 40. While the core elements of fitness remain exactly the same, your body changes, and knowing how to adapt to any changes in flexibility or strength becomes critical.

Cardio is at the Top

If one desires to lose weight, cardio is not a point of debate. It really gets your metabolism going; it enhances your endurance, and there are a bunch of good things coming with it. When one is getting older, one may observe at this stage that he or she gets winded faster, something considered normal.

But remember, going to the brink is not the right approach. It’s not about “Go hard or go home.” Go easy, and improve gradually. If possible, follow some structured programs such as P90X or Insanity. That way, you are introduced to good exercises and do not feel compelled to try to keep up at all costs. Do the best you can, rest when you need to, and move along!

Heavy Lifting, Reduced Workouts

For most 40-year-olds, life is a responsibility from career to family, so on and so forth. Workouts have to be short but effective; focus on the heavy for better form, from 6 to 8 reps. Forget the high reps and shoot for 4 to 5 sets of 6 to 8 reps.

Recover, recover, recover! Focus on the compound exercises before focusing on the isolation movements. Pull-ups will always benefit you more than preacher curls, but feel free to add those in if you have extra time.

Stretching and Warm Up

You should always stretch after working out! Before engaging in any resistance training, warm up your muscles with 5 minutes of light cardio: jumping jacks, light jogging, skipping rope-just anything that gets your blood moving!

Warning: warming up is not stretching! As for the maximum level, do not overstretch before resistance training, as it can limit your performance.

Give Yourself Some Rest

Take a rest between the sets and between workouts. If your muscles ache, let them have the time to recover. Remember that the older the person, the longer healing will take. Patience is a virtue!

Maintain Control

With resistance training, focus on control and not on how much explosive power you can achieve. Too many men get injured while jerking weights around, or simply trying to push their limits too fast. Take your time in the gym and focus on proper form. Don’t rush yourself through any type of exercises, especially any heavy lifting. It’s all about safety.

Nutrition

Your diet becomes even more important as your body is in change. You can’t do much about aging, but you can absolutely control what you put into your body. Focus on clean eating and portion control.

A well-rounded diet will keep you feeling vibrant and energized, while a poor diet contributes to weight gain and health issues.

Keep a Positive Mindset

Remember, “Your attitude determines your altitude!” Preserve an optimistic outlook and believe in your abilities, regardless of your age. Reaching 40 is not a turning point that needs to define you as being over the hill. With decision and a strong frame of mind, you can restore your physical and mental wellness, and uncover the energy and vigor you once had.

Most of the top bodybuilders reach their prime during their 40s, and look at the cast of The Expendables-they are all still fit and strong!

So keep your head high, dig in, and tell yourself you can be fit and fabulous. It’s absolutely possible… and today is the day to start! Let’s do this!
